Not that I’m eavesdropping, but nearly everyday I overhear conversations or see faces that could wind up in one of my books. Years ago my writing coach suggested I buy small notepads to capture the inspiration. I like to find cool and unusual pads like the one in this photo. It’s my latest.

In this one, (so far) I’ve written the phrase, ‘he was one of those guys who walked as if he were seated in an invisible chair.’  You’ve seen people who seem to walk in a seated position.

My next entry will be about a face I can’t forget. An older woman came up to me at the gas station to ask if I had any plastic bottles. She waited until I pumped my gas and I gave her a few from the floor of my car. She had a round face with few lines, sparkly eyes and sun-warmed high cheek bones.  “I have the best job in the world,” she said. “I don’t have to deal with people in an office.”

She had a cat-canary smile.

I’m not sure if any or all of my notes will end up in a book, but the process is training me to observe, to listen, and to really see people.
